I think life is what you believe it is. For instace, a religious man will tell you that life is meant to honor god, while waiting for the life after death, hopefully in heaven. Some people might say that life is all about continuity - raising a family and trying to leave a mark on this world. Some might say that life is simply a biological process that has no purpose. What do you believe in?

If yoyu are a fatalist, yo uwill thiunk the life begins and ends without any real purpose since the no one have nay controle over birth and death. We come and go very much unvolunterily. (unless you decide to end your life yourself). In this view, life is nothing but an useless sequence of events and we just drift by, shoved by external events.
However, if you are more constructive in your thinking, you might want to see life is nothing but an endless continuam of events leading towards perfection to imperfection. As we grow, we should everyday, every second perfect our skills and faculty and ultimately reach a state where instead of life takes us for a ride , we consciously take in charge of life and take it where we want to take it. thats the ultimate goal, and once you reach their, you will be having a first hand experience of this seemingly un unswerable question of yours.

You're asking some questions that philosophers have been debating all the time. All arguments are right in their own point of view, so it's only the matter what you believe.
